  • In the laboratory, we examine different drug administration options. In addition to traditional oral treatment, we also test alternative routes (transdermal, intranasal, etc.). Our methods include traditional and miniaturized diffusion cell tests, optical microscopy, confocal Raman spectroscopy and morphological/histological analysis. In addition to the characterization of ex vivo skin tissues, we also work on in vitro human reconstructed epidermis 3D tissue culture samples. In the assays, we investigate healthy tissues and dermatological disease models (psoriasis, allergic contact dermatitis, wound healing, UV-erythema, etc.).
  • Alginate-based artificial epidermis and full thickness skin produced by bioprinting are also being developed for permeability testing.

The skin-on-a-chip microfluidic platforms can be used for skin aging studies, for analysing skin disorders and therapeutic strategies and for testing cosmetic products. This in vitro systems are physiologically relevant models which can replace the animal experiments and able to mimic the dynamism of the living organs.
